Venture X Vacation Rental Credit Card: Should You Apply?
Loyalty programs are common in the travel industry, and vacation rental credit has become a popular feature. Most recently, Expedia joined the bandwagon and introduced its new loyalty program — One Key. That’s just one of the services that travelers can use to save on their next trip, including future vacation rental purchases.
Another popular one is Capital One’s credit cards, specifically the Capital One Venture X card, which offers two credit cards that travelers can use for vacation rental purchases among other things. From hotels in Las Vegas to other related services like rental cars, here’s how you can use Capital One Venture X for your travel purchases, including vacation rentals.
What’s the Venture X Card?
Launched in 2021, the Capital One Venture X Rewards credit card is a top comprehensive travel credit card, designed with vacation rentals in mind. One of its major attractions is its very attractive welcome bonus for vacation rental credit. On top of the initial welcome bonus, cardholders are also treated to an account anniversary bonus of 10,000 miles (worth $100) each year, which can be used for future vacation rental purchases.
Aside from these bonuses, One Venture X rewards are also lucrative, especially for regular travelers. You can redeem your earned miles for various travel purchases such as airfare, vacation rentals, and hotel bookings.
Who Is Eligible to Apply?
Capital One Venture X is available to US citizens with excellent credit. The eligibility criteria are designed to ensure responsible use, especially for those looking to benefit from vacation rental credit. To meet this credit criteria, you should never have:
- Declared bankruptcy
- Defaulted on a loan
- Paid a credit card, loan, or medical bill more than 60 days late within the last year
As for your credit background, you should also have had a credit card/loan with a credit limit of at least $5,000 for a minimum of three years.
One Venture X Rewards: What Can You Expect?
In addition to those two bonuses, here are some of the other rewards that you can look forward to when you become a cardholder:
- If you manage to spend $4,000 on purchases within the first three months after opening your account, you can look forward to a very generous bonus of 75,000 miles.
- You can earn up to $300 back in the form of statement credits for bookings that you made via Capital One Travel, its travel portal.
- You can earn a credit of up to $100 for completing the TSA PreCheck or Global Entry application. However, note that you’ll also need to pay the application fee which can range between $85 and $100, depending on which one you apply for.
- You and two guests can enjoy unlimited complimentary access to Capital One airport lounges.
- For Premier Collection bookings, you’ll qualify for a $100 experience credit to redeem during your stay and a daily breakfast for two. When available, you can also take advantage of a room upgrade or early check-in/late checkout.
- For regular flyers, there’s the Priority Pass Select Airport lounge membership that’s valued at $469.
- For budget-conscious travelers, there’s the price-match guarantee. Capital One Travel checks their rates against platforms like Booking.com and Expedia to give travelers the lowest price. However, if you find a better price on another website within 24 hours after booking it, you’ll get a travel credit to cover the difference.
How Does Its Reward System Work?
Hotel bookings and rental cars will earn you the most miles. When booked through Capital One Travel, you can earn ten times the miles.
After booking a hotel room or rental car, flights are the most lucrative. For flights booked via its online booking experience, you’ll earn five times the miles.
All the other travel purchases will earn you only twice the miles.
Its miles are also very flexible. You can use it for travel-related charges to your account or redeem it for cash backs, merch, gift cards, or statement credits.
It also supports the transfer of miles. Capital One has a sizable network of transfer partners that include airline and hotel loyalty programs like Air France, Virgin Atlantic Virgin Red, and Accor Live Limitless.
What Does the Venture X Card Cost?
Not only are the rewards generous, but the fees are also reasonable. The annual fee is $395. In fact, with the annual travel credit and anniversary miles, you could justify paying this annual fee.
As for other fees, you won’t be charged foreign transaction fees for purchases outside of the United States. Plus, if you want to add extra cardholders to your account, it’s free.
As for interest rates and charges, the annual percentage rate (APR) for transfers and purchases range between 21.99% and 28.99%, depending on your credit rating.
Fees that you’ll need to keep in mind, though, are transaction fees and penalty fees. Late payments can incur you a fine of up to $40. However, that’s the only potential penalty fee that you have to worry about.
What Do the Reviews Say?
That’s what the Capital One Venture X card looks like on paper. What’s the experience of actual users?
Forbes has named it as the best flexible rewards card in 2023. What helped their card to land this prestigious title is its generous offering of extras. This makes it a premium travel card that can compete with other upscale cards without charging cardholders such an expensive annual fee.
All in all, it’s a great card for travelers that have no issue with using its booking portal. That said, if you prefer to make your bookings directly via airline and hotel groups, you’ll find this detail annoying.
Also, the lounge network is still in its early days. Its network of domestic airline and upscale hotel travel partners is also limited.
As for cost, it’s reasonable and can offer better value than your other options. While there’s an annual fee involved, it’s more affordable compared to other popular alternative rewards credit cards.
Travel Credit Card Alternatives to Capital One Venture X
The Platinum Card from American Express (Amex Platinum) and Chase Sapphire are two popular alternatives to Capital One Venture X. However, while both these cards offer similar benefits, their annual fees are much higher.
The American Express Platinum’s annual membership fee is nearly double that of Capital One and will set you back $695 per year. Chase Sapphire’s Reserve Credit Card is slightly cheaper with an annual fee of $550. However, unlike Capital One, you’ll need to pay for extra authorized users.
Alternatively, you can also check out the Capital One Venture Rewards credit card. While the rewards rate isn’t that high, it’s annual fee is much lower and will set you back less than $100. Plus, you can still benefit from the same attractive intro offer of 75,000 miles.
